Frequently Asked Questions
How and why are decorative films used?Decorative window films are used for a variety of purposes, including privacy, protection from harmful UV rays, or simply to add a distinctive look to windows, doors, sidelights, or any glass surface. Modern films are easily applied with simple tools to the inside surface of the glass.
What is the difference between static cling and adhesive-based films?Static cling films use electrostatic technology to adhere to the glass. The film is easily removed and re-positioned during and after installation.
Self-adhesive films have a thin adhesive that is activated when the protective liner is removed and water is applied. Once the adhesive dries, the process for removal is similar to that of wallpaper.
We sell both types of films and each comes with clear installation instructions. Adhesive-based films are clearly identified on each product page.
How can I be sure I’m getting quality window film? All Element Window Films are manufactured in accordance with ISO 9000:2001 procedures, an internationally recognized standard of excellence. We carefully inspect all orders before shipping to ensure you get a great product.
How much film will I need?Modern windows typically are 36” or less in width. Our 36” standard rolls are ideal for this size window, providing some overlap of the actual glass area for positioning and final trimming. Just determine the length required in feet and you’re there. Remember the carpenter’s rule. Measure twice, cut once. Installation contains instructions and helpful hints for determining exactly how much film to order.
What if I can’t decide which design works best for me?We will be happy to provide you with up to five free product samples to assist you in your decision. Each sample is approximately 4” by 6”, allowing you to place them on the window surface side-by-side to see which film works best for you. Samples can be particularly helpful, for example, if you are considering different sizes of lines or different transparencies. Samples are shipped to you via standard mail, on a one-time basis, free of charge.
How is the film packaged and delivered to my address? Each order is placed in a protective tube with instructions, a cutting knife and a squeegee for installation. We use standard ground shipping (about 3 days) unless expedited delivery is selected. You will receive an acknowledgement of your order and a tracking number with the estimated delivery date once the order is in transit.
What payment methods do you accept? We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and PayPal.
Can I really install this film myself?Absolutely! Easy to follow instructions and a few simple tools (supplied) are all you need. Remove the protective backing from the film and install using a water and soap solution. Static Cling films are particularly easy as they can be removed and re-installed multiple times. See Installation for details and helpful hints.
Where can I install decorative films?Basically, window films can be installed on any flat, clean surface, from sliding glass patio doors to standard home windows to glass partitions on home entertainment centers. Films are applied to the inside of the glass for maximum protection and longevity. See Static Cling for a list of potential uses.
Can the film be installed in moist or humid conditions such as bathrooms?Yes. If you intend to install on the shower door itself, we recommend installation on the outside versus the inside. Other bathroom windows are fine with the standard installation procedures.
Will I need special tools or equipment? We supply a cutting knife, squeegee and instructions with each order. You will need a mild soap and water solution in a spray bottle to clean the window and apply to the film during installation, and paper towels to wipe away the excess moisture. See Installation Instructions for details and helpful hints.
What do you mean by protective value of the film?Window films typically block up to 99 percent of ultraviolet(UV) sunlight based on their density and design, and may assist in resisting fading of furniture and floors in rooms where there is a lot of direct sun. No product can completely eliminate fading due to UV exposure.
How much privacy will the film provide? That depends on the decorative design selected. Decorative films typically diffuse light rather than block it completely. Look for the products under Privacy if that is your primary objective.
How long will the product last?Actual duration depends on use, exposure to light, etc, but a lifespan of 5 to 8 years is common. Our products are warranted against defects in materials for one year after purchase. Static Cling films are actually designed for a more frequent refresh cycle, as they are easily installed and removed.
How do I clean the windows after the film is applied?Use a common cleaning solution and soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive towels.
What is the warranty for Element Window Films?Element Window Films come with a one-year warranty against defects in materials. See Warranty for full details.
